KAT EFTINK

Writer. Creator. Art Enthusiast.

I grew up in Southaven, MS, but I went to Memphis every weekend. My friends and I went downtown. We walked up and down the streets. We took pictures of each other, of the buildings, and of the street art.

The art brought me to Memphis. The food is art. The music is art. The people are art. There is art on almost every wall.

Memphis’s art has more impact than Memphis’s crime. Now, I know that might sound absurd considering Memphis was rated the most dangerous city in America, but this city is made of art. I think the art puts a smile on Memphians’ faces, and I don’t think the crime has that kind of power. The power to bring joy.

Street art is my favorite. It gives people the opportunity to experience beautiful visuals full of vibrant colors for free. Street art adds character and beauty to areas that maybe once weren’t so beautiful like under bridges or on busted buildings.

Art is important to me and this city. Instead of making national news for murders or kidnappings we could be making national news for art and the creative people that live in this city. I know that statement might be unreasonable, but dreams have to start somewhere.

What I want to do is shine the light of creatives in this city. To show people how amazing Memphis is and how amazing the people are. I won’t give up on shining that light.
